Funnie Papers

New York (with a stop in Cincinnati), 1969-70s

pic

The Funnie Papers were a travelling road/lounge band who were seen playing in Cincinnati, San Francisco, and Galveston, TX, and likely many other major to mid size cities for a month or so at a time. As seen in the pic, they had three members, with singer Genie Valente as the front woman. Sam Taylor, Genie's husband, played piano, and Rick Kresge was the drummer. In late 1969 they had a gig at Cincinnati's Playboy club. During that gig they recorded some songs at Jewel, no doubt in one session, and had a couple 45s made up to sell as show souveniers.

Unlike a lot of their lounge peers, they recorded original songs, with no "MacArthur Park" or "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In" to be found. The songs are polished pop-rock with horns added.
