the Malcontents

Cincinnati, 1965-7

The Malcontents were students at Norwood High School in Cincinnati. The band was started in 1965 and included Lary Groves (lead singer, rhythm guitar), Bob Mathis (lead guitar), David White (bass) and a girl, Jan Elstun (drums). The band played teen dances, Swordsville Lake, and one appearance on the 50/50 Club TV show (hosted by Cincy legend Bob Braun), where they shared the bill with Barbara Eden and Michael Ensara (from the Broken Arrow TV show).

In late '66 they recorded two songs at Artist Recording in Cincinnati, the boss garage mover "(I'm A) Roustabout" (based on pop culture catch phrase) and the guitar instrumental "Motivated Action". The record was pressed at Rite under the GEMS label, a combination of the band members' initials. The group broke up when the leader joined the Army and another member felt conflict with his Christianity.
