Marv Lockard

Cincinnati, 1957-1967

March, 1957

Marv Lockard is best remembered for the Dolphins, a group he was in that recorded a national hit record. He recorded other records before and after the Dolphins.

He started his recording career by singing on budget line records from the Rite recording/pressing plant operation in Cincinnati. The labels were Big 4 Hits and Gateway. Marv's first recording, best we can tell, was a cover of "Hound Dog". He recorded other Elvis covers. Several of his songs were released twice or three times as Rite kept repackaging the recordings on their family of labels. Rite is best known for their 30+ year pressing business but they started as a budget line record operation. Marv's recordings date from 1956-7, there doesn't seem to be anything after that date.

Marv had a 45 on his own in 1957. Joey Bochenek, who used the professsional name Joey Ray (from his middle name), started the Echo record label. Joey was a well known local musician who went back to the big band days. Marv was a likely choice to be Cincy's teen rock king. Joey and his band backed Marv and released the 45 on his Echo label. The record was mentioned in Billboard and sold well locally.

There isn't much known about him until his time with the Dolphins. According to the book "The Cincinnati Sound" he was in the Seniors, a group who recorded a 45 for ESV.

Marv returned to the recording scene in 1967 with a 45 on Counterpart. The 45 was recorded at Allen-Martin in Louisville, sounds like the New Lime is backing him.

He passed away in 2005.
