the Fabulous Shantels / the Shantels

Covington, KY 1965-7

Busting out of the Covington/metropolitan Cincinnati area, the Fabulous Shantels were together for about 3 years. The band included Mike Dektas (organ), Terry Williams (drums), JC Ecton (bass), and Mike Mays (guitar).

The band played the circuit of local dance and teen clubs, and opening for touring stars. They were promoted and managed by WSAI DJ Dusty Rhodes. When Dusty moved to Detroit in late 1966, he kept in touch, which led the band to record an excellent garage 45 up north at suburban Detroit's Sound Incorporated, in early December 1966.

The 45 has a band original "Remain Unknown Girl" which does sound a bit like Paul Revere and the Raiders. using a "Louie Go Home" riff. The other side is a nice slow dance time cover of the standard "For Your Love". The band name was mispelled 'Fablous' on the lable. According to a newspaper clipping of the time, they recorded four songs but it's not confirmed if the other two were finished.

FWIW, the band name is listed in the local papers with and without the Fabulous prefix, but from all retrospectice accounts Fabulous Shantels is the correct moniker.
