 Sharon Lee

Cincinnati? late 1950s-late 1960s

Sharon Lee was a country/rockabilly singer from SW Ohio. She may have lived in Cincinnati, or Springfield, or moved between the two cities. There is nothing about her musical adventures in the papers or from other sources. She likely had the given name Beulah Lay. Even with nothing else to say about her, she left a legacy on three 45s.

The first 45 was recorded on Excellent in 1958, the A side has het co-credited with Ray Britt on the song "Kissing Game", an original by them, sharing credits with someone listed as Carter. Joe Elliot - not the Def Leppard singer - plays guitar.

Four years later, she had a second 45 on Jewel, one of the earliest records on the label. The B side "Rockin' and Washing Sue" is probably her best known song, with some good rockabilly guitar and her tough vocal. The A side of the record features Sharon and her sister (or daughter?) Marjorie "Marge" Lay.

Seven years later she recorded a thrid (and seemingly last) 45, credited with a band, the Moonrockers. The record is comtermporary country sounding. Again there is nothing about her in the regional papers, but a band named the Moonrockers played a country show in Springfield in 1966. They would seem to be the same band, although Sharon may not have been with them at that date. They were backing a square dance group who were regulars on the WLW Midwestern Hayride.

There were a couple mentions of Beulah Lay in the Cincinnati papers, regarding family matters, from 1969 and 1972. She was listed at an address in the city.

A daughter of hers has posted on Youtube acknowledging that she passed away some time ago.
