the Countrymen / Buddy Allen and the Countrymen

Piqua, 1971-5

pic

It would be appropriate for the leader of a city based country music band to have a day job as an auto mechanic. Piqua's Buddy Allen was the man in town for tune-ups and twang.

Buddy led the Countrymen, who played locally from 1971 to 1975, best we can tell. In 1975 there seems to have been a change as Buddy, or Bud was leading the Country Edition, and the Countrymen were led by Harry Burd. The band members were Buddy on vocals, Ron Lininger on lead guitar and bass, Harry Burd on steel guitar and  bass, and Fred Snyder on drums.

The band recorded one 45 in 1971, pretty early in their existence. The record would be a footnote in the vast Ohio country recording scene, if it were not for the record's B-side, a song named "Flare-Up!!'  that sounds more like 1966 garage rock than country, including angry lyrics about the protagonist's girlfriend/wife. Ron Lininger is credited with lead vocals. The record was issued on the Audio Adventures label, a Piqua based custom recording studio, and it's the only known music record on the label. The other AA record is a drag racing recording dating about about 7 years earlier.
