Deadlys / Dead / Carnaby Knaves / Shock

Columbus, 1965-8

pic

One of the bands who appeared on the Hillside 1966 compilation. Their lone contribution was a raving version of "On the Road Again", originally done by the Lovin' Spoonful.

The band was from the eastside of Columbus. The members were Bob McCarthy (drums), Neal Hirsch, Jerry Gubbins, and Duane Neff.

The band used a few different names during their existence, the Carnaby Knaves and the Dead. When they recorded their contribution to the Hillside LP, Hillside - well, Larry McKenzie - listed them as the Deadlys. Later they were briefly known as Shock.

The band played in the teen dance scene such as school dances and pool parties. Their most popular gigs were a couple shows at the Fashion clothing store in downtown Columbus during the spring of 1966.

Bob McCarthy played in other bands. He passed away around 2010.
