the Solid Gold

Cleveland, 1966-7

The Solid Gold were from Cleveland’s west side. The band included Ade Schreiber on vocals, Mickey Bruno on guitar, Don Papes on bass, Gary Cernan on keyboards, and Tom Szaller on drums. Previously Ade had been in the band Ade and the Devotions. The band played places such as the Heidelberg on W. 25th

In 1967 the band cut a 45, issued on the Matawan label with a St. Clair Ave address. They covered the Baskerville Hounds’ should have been hit “Sad Eyed Lady” and “Hold On I’m Coming”. The record has horns overdubbed, they were not part of the band. The record seemed to have sold some copies as used ones still appear on the used record market.

Sometime after the 45, Ade left the band and they added two brothers named Bell as dual lead singers.

Mickey Bruno and Gary Cernan were later in the HighBoys, while Don Papes later joined the Saxons. Ade Schreiber owned the Woodstock bar in the early 1970s. Mickey Bruno is deceased.
